We Bought a Cheap Mobile Home to Transform into our Chic Dream Home!
We moved to Springfield, Oregon to gain access to world-renowned healthcare and had a very short timeframe to find housing that would be wheelchair-friendly, dog-friendly, and not require selling internal organs to afford it!
Mobile Home to the Rescue!
Our solution was buying a mobile home, they are affordable, build equity – you own it instead of throwing money away on rent, and if we move we can relocate it. Our criteria was a late model (we didn’t want sudden major expenses like replacing a roof or dealing with mold), 2 BD/1 BA single wide home at least 700 sq ft (comparable to apartments in that area) with wide doorways and an open floorplan.
We purchased a 2023 Skyline Ramada Value single wide 784 sq ft home from a 55+ community that allowed us to live there for our upcoming health needs even though we aren’t old enough. This turned out to be a great way to get a deal on a brand new home that met our accessibility needs, was affordable, and saved us $20K in delivery, setup, permit and installation fees that usually accompany new mobile homes purchased directly from dealers. It also helped buying the home with cash in a down market with high interest mortgage rates.
Value Trim Decoded
What do you get when you purchase a ‘Value’ trim model? One word sums it up… WHITE! White everything, so much white that the home looks sterile and void of personality. Flat White walls, white cabinets, white vents, white doors, and white trim.
Value also means you have the basic no-frills version of decor. Window Blinds are the cheap vinyl ones everyone hates that are found in apartments, Flooring is sheet vinyl that comes in rolls – looks nice but our dogs’ nails are scratching it up something fierce, and included light fixtures look to be the cheapest option from Home Depot.

An Open Canvas Full Of Possibilities
We are looking forward to transforming our Value home into our Dream Home. From the boring exterior to the monochrome interior, we will remodel our mobile home into a space that inspires us and brings nature inside through our decor.
